Your skin is the largest organ you have and you absorb things through your skin. The skin does not have any type of filter so whatever you put on your skin such as perfumes, sunscreen, lotion, makeup, deodorant, and soaps absorb directly into your bloodstream.
It has been estimated that if you use cosmetics on a daily basis that you can absorb up to five pounds of chemicals into your body through the skin every year! And according to the Environmental Working Group women use an average of twelve beauty products a day that contain nearly 200 chemicals! That is a lot of added stress on your body to try to filter out those chemicals and get them out of your system.
A few of the top chemicals found in beauty products are heavy metals (including lead), formaldehyde, phthalates, parabens, and coal tar. A lot of these chemicals disrupt the endocrine system which disrupts your body’s natural hormones. They may also contribute to skin issues, eye irritation, infertility, increased risk of cancer, and have an effect on brain health and development.
In order to find healthier beauty and cosmetic problems I recommend using the Environmental Working Group (EWG) skin deep page at www.ewg.org/skindeep/ You can enter in a brand of beauty products and it will give you a score on how clean the product is. EWG also has a phone application that is handy to use while you are out and about.
If you are looking for natural alternatives for skin care products I highly recommend researching things you probably have in your house.
- Coconut oil has natural antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Try using it in your bath water instead of soap and it is so moisturizing for the skin! Just be careful because it makes the bathtub slippery!
- Raw honey may help to prevent breakouts, is moisturizing, and acts like an antiseptic.
- Avocado oil is high in healthy fats and can help to moisturize hair and skin.
- Aloe vera may help to reduce sunburn and inflammation.
- Shea butter moisturizes skin.
- Jojoba oil is a great oil to use on your face to moisturize
The beauty and cosmetic world needs to be regulated more so toxic chemicals are not allowed to be used in the manufacturing of these products.
