Years ago I used to think it was normal to get shaky and feel like I needed to eat something to feel better. Then other times I would eat and I felt like I needed to take a nap.I have learned it is not normal to have blood sugar spikes and crashes. With a clean diet and healthier lifestyle choices, I do not experience blood sugar spikes and crashes anymore.
Carbohydrates and sugars contribute to blood sugar spikes and crashes. Sugar, grains, and processed foods have a huge impact on blood sugar and contribute to you not feeling well.
When carbohydrates are eaten your body breaks them down into small sugar molecules that are released into the bloodstream. Then your blood sugar levels increase so your pancreas secretes the hormone insulin into your bloodstream. The insulin then tells the body to take the glucose (sugar) from the bloodstream and store it away. So then the insulin levels continue to rise and the blood sugar levels go down.
Insulin’s job is to lower blood sugar but the more insulin you secrete the more fat your body will accumulate. If you are constantly eating sugar and carbohydrates your blood sugar level will be high and if it remains high over time then your body becomes desensitized to insulin. This means that your body needs more and more insulin to help lower blood sugar, which may lead to weight gain and diabetes.
The good thing is that blood sugar levels can be adjusted through a proper diet and lifestyle changes.
- Limit your carbohydrate intake.
- Instead of eating carbohydrates eat healthy fats like eggs, butter, avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, and raw nuts. This helps turn the body into fat burning mode. It may be a strange concept to think of that you need to eat fat to burn fat!
- Eat non-starchy veggies like leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, tomatoes, peppers, celery, brussel sprouts, ect.
- Eat protein
- grass fed and organic preferably for beef
- organic pasture raised chicken
- Wild caught fish
- Drink lots of clean, pure water!
- Exercise! Your body is made to move!
Learning how to eat for life also not only helps you, but it also helps your entire family that you are cooking for. Start making a food journey of your daily food intake. This will help you to see the amount of carbohydrates and sugars you are consuming in a day. If you eat two pieces of toast in the morning for breakfast try cutting it down to one piece. Start with one small change at a time and work your way towards a healthier life.
